Latin: Aix Sponsa.
Field Marks: 18.5 in. A crested cavity-nesting duck of wooded swamps, marshes, and freshwater areas with plenty of cover. Abundant and familiar; often nests in swamps or near rivers in residential areas. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks, but may form larger flocks in winter. Males unmistakable, with boldly marked and neatly striped face pattern of green, white, and purplish; throat and upper breast brown, with bold white line separating breast from buff flanks and belly; back and wings dark brown, glossy-looking; bill mainly red. Females dark above, with paler brown breast, pale gray belly; head grayish-brown with distinctive pale patch around eye. Call of female a piercing "tereeek" or "woo-eek"! Male gives a hissing squeal: "ter-eee".
Range: Breeds from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Maritime Provinces south to s. California, Texas, Gulf Coast, and Florida; absent from most interior West. Winters north to coastal British Columbia, Colorado, s. Iowa, Ohio Valley, and s. New England.
